TFPL, Jan 2012: Could find no record of her birth on either Family Search or the Old Parish Registers on Scotland’s People.  The only note of her birth is in the hand of her son William.

TFPL< Nov 2020: A thought while analysing the arms of the Browns and the Trotters: was she a heraldic heiress?  Arms were matriculated by a Balfour of Pilrig in 1760.  Was her father included in this matriculation?  She had three brothers; I have no record of any children of those brothers though I do have some records of their marriages.  But if none of her brothers had surviving children and if her father did carry the Balfour arms (with a suitable distinction) she would have been an heiress.  To be investigated further and at a later date.

In 2021 I found that Scotland’s People had the marriage register page also under the name Broun.  My transcript is:

“Mr George Broun Merchant in Leith and Miss Margaret Balfour Daughter of Major Henry Balfour of Leith after proclamation of banns were married July 19th 1786.”

This brings us right back into the issue of which Henry Balfour was involved.  Other entries on the same page included ‘deceased’ for some of the fathers so it sounds as if it means that this Henry was still alive in 1786 but both Henries were alive then.
