Notes for Robert de Clifford Lord Clifford
Feudal baron (2nd class) of Appleby, Westmorland.
Sanders, Baronies p. 104, note (2) says he m. Maud Clare but it was undoubtedly his father that did this fell deed.
Smyth writes that in private both he and his father were called Roger, but the public records always say Robert.
CP says, Vol III, p. 292, note (d), that Sir Lewis Clifford KG was probably a brother of Roger the 5th lord, making him a son of this Robert de Clifford.

In June 2006, John Ravilous found a grant of the marriage of his son that refers to this Robert as deceased and is dated 1 April 1343, such that this Robert must have died before that.
