Notes for John Slaney
Listed in the will of his brother Richard.

RCL P-L says: that he was b. at Barrow, Salop and d. 7 Apr 1632.  That his arms are in the window of St Martin's Ironmonger lane.  That he m. (2) Eliz., widow of Erasmus Harley and they had 2 sons but both died bef Aug 1631.  That he was buried in St Martin's Pomeroy church, Ironmonger lane, London.

He some befriended Tisquantum, a North American Native, and had him in his house for a while.  See this Mayflower History article: <http://www.mayflowerhistory.com/History/BiographyT...>.  The relevant paragraph is:

“One Patuxet did survive, however: Tisquantum.  He had somehow found himself passage from Malaga, Spain into England, where he began living with John Slaney in Cornhill, London, and began picking up the English language.  John Slaney was the treasurer of the Newfoundland Company which had managed to place a colony at Cupper's Cove (Cupids), Newfoundland in 1610; he employed Tisquantum, presumably as an interpreter and as an expert on North American natural resources.  He was sent to Newfoundland, and worked there with Captain John Mason, governor of the Newfoundland Colony. ”

His will: made on 17th Aug 1631, proved 26 Apr 1632:

To be buried in St Martin Church in Ironmonger lane in London near the body of my late wife [whom????] and my two sons (unnamed) if I die near London.
To my sister ELIZABETH EATON £10 and to my brother EATON her husband a suit of apparel and to three of the daughters of my said sister £10 each I have already given to my cousin VINCENT one of her daughters.
To my sister Mary ALLEN £10
To my kinsman THOMAS HARWELL my sister's son £10 and to JOANE BULLOCK his sister 12d.  To my cousin LEWES another daughter of my said sister HARWELL £10.
To the children of my cousin BRADLEY deceased £10 and to the children of my cousin HOW deceased £10
To my cousins ELIZABETH and ANN daughters of my borther HUMPHRY SLANY £100 each
To my kinswoman Mary CASWELL 50/- for a ring and to her husband RICHARD CASWELL a like sum to make him a ring and to my godson JOHN CASWELL #5 and to the rest of the children of my said kinswoman MARY CASWELL which I take to be three 40/- each
To my cousin (as regd copy) DOROTHY CLOWBERRRY £5.  All the legacies before given to my cousins under 21 not to be paid until they reach that age or day fo marriage.

Whereas it hath pleased God to take unto Himslef my kinsman RICHARD SALNY eldest sone of my said brother RICHARD SLANY deceased to whom I did purpose to give all my said lands and Farm called the Heme and had reposed great trust in him for the performance of my will concerning the almshouses etc aforesaid I therefore to my aforesaid cousin JOHN SLANY brother of the said RICHARD all and singular those lands and the farm called Jefferies Farm in this parish of Astley co.Salop for ever, he taking care and charge to provide for, educate and bring those four children of my said kinsman RICHARD SLANY deceased being young namely RICHARD, JOHN, ANN and MARY and to pay to the said RICHARD and JOHN #500 at their ages of 24 years and #100 the said daughters ANN & MARY at Marriage.  If my said kinsman John SLANY will not pay the said legacies then I give the said farms to my loving brother Humphry SLANY and his heirs and if said HUmfrey SLANY my brother will not pay up the said legacies thein I give the said farms to the said RICHARD and JOHN children of my said late kinsmane RICHARD deceased for ever and I do request them to pay the said #100 each to their sisters Ann & Mary at their marriages.
To my aforesaid cousin JOHN SLANY sone of my late brother RICHARD SLANY deceased my lands and farm now in the occupation of one WILLIAM BUCKLEY situate in the parish of Lynley co. Salop for ever he paying to RICHARD SLANEY, STEPHEN SLANY and WILLIAM SLANY sone of my late kinsman STEPHEN SLANEY deceased £150 each at ther i several ages of 24 years and also to [blank] SLANY daughter of the said STEPHEN SLANY deceased #50 at the age of 21 or marriage.
It is my hope that my said kinsman JOHN SLANY if he should die without leaving issue male behind him, not to sell nor do away any part of the farms and lands which I have given him in the county Salop aforesaid to any person or persons but leave the same descend to the heirs male of the said SLANYES for ever.
To my said kinsman JOHN SLANY sone of my said brother RICHARD SLANY deceased the lease of my aforesaid house and lands called Pansanger co.Herts aforesaid from one year after my decease he paying to said ANN EATON my housekeeper the aforesaid sum of £20 and permit her to carry away such household stuff and other things as are how own being particularly expressed in an Inventory under my hand whether they be remaining in or about my house in Cornhill in London or Pansanger
I give to my cousin the wife of the said JOHN SALNY £10 for a nagg or gelding.
To my nephew MOSES SLANY son of my aforesaid brother RICHARD SLANY deceased for ever my farm called Jordans now in the occupation of WILLIAM NELSON situate in Rayneham co.Essex of the yearly value of £30.
To my cousing JOHN SLANY son of my brother HUMPHRY SLANY my farm called Dummings with appurtenances now in the tenure of him the said JOHN SLANY and one tenement called Smokehouse now in the occupation of [blank] BEERE & two cottages called Cowpers and Cornes with appurtenances of the yearly value of #8 per ann and 8 acres of Marsh land which I purchased of Sir Benjamin AYLEFFE Knight now in the tenure of HUGH HODSON...
To my cousin [blank[ SLANY the wife of my said cousin JOHN SLANY last mentioned my coach and coach house.
To my cousin HUMPHRY SLANY son of my said brother HUMPHRY SLANY and brother of the said JOHN SLANY an annuity of #30 out of the Parsonage land of Raynham aforesaid.
To my cousin GILES SLANY sone of my said brother HUMPHRY SLANY and to his heirs and assignees for ever an annuity of £50 per ann out of the Parsonage lands of Rayneham aforesaid.
To my cousin NATHANIEL COCK and JOANE his wife 50/- each for rings.
To my aforesaid brother Humphry SLANY for ever my capital messuage called Parsonage in Rayneham aforesaid now in the tenure of one WILLIAM NELSON, provided he pay to his siad two sone HUMPHRY and GILES SLANY the annuities before mentioned.
The residue of my goods I give to my said brother HUMPHRY SLANY and I appoint him sole Executor.
