Notes for Richard Cleburn
The Yorks 1584-5 Visitation by Jo. Foster, pub 1875, p. 255 has a Richard Cleburn of Kellerby, Nr Richmond, whose forbears came from Westmorland and who is shown with a dau. Agnes, but no husband. This Richard m. Elinor Lancaster of Sockbridge, Westmorland and which is also shown in the Lancaster pedigree, p. 75, in the Foster’s Westmorland.& Cumberland visitations, pub c. 1890.
VCH Yorks North Riding, vol 1 has an article on Catterick, pp. 301-313 which include mentions of the Cleburns of Killerby:
Richard Cleburne bought the manor off Sir John Cuttes in 1569 and died still holding it c. 1588 when it went to his s. & heir, Edmund, followed by hsi heir Thomas. Significantly in 1617 a precautionary grant of the manor was made to Humphrey Wharton and Sir Timothy Hutton; the latter’s daughter Elizabeth had married Edmund Cleburne, son and heir of Thomas, above. This indicated that Humphrey Wharton had strong connections with the nearby Cleburnes.
