Burke's Commoners gives several generations before this chappie, going back to the late 14th century. They need a load of confirmation, not to mention some clarification of whether the Barbara Mitford who married John Slaney was in fact a descendant of this family.
In 2005, Stirnet also shows several prior generations claiming support from Burke’s Landed gentry of 1952, specifically the entries for Mitford of Mitford and Mitford of Pitshill and from Burke’s peerage of 1932 for Mitford of Redesdale. And it is now in the 2003 and 107th edition of Burke’s Peerage, so I am using this for Robert’s ancestors.
The Northumberland Visitation says he was born out of wedlock.
