Almost bankrupted himself in building Myrtle Grove and, at his death, the interest charges were as much as his income and ended with £70,000 of properties being sold to meet the debts, including 1650 acres alone between Brodley, Craven and Crosby in the North Riding. (Fragments, p. 39).
