Notes for George Browne
His signature (or a facsimile thereof) is on the Visitation of Surrey, pub Harleian in 1899, p. 17.

In Burke's extinct baronets, 2nd edn, pub 1841) for Browne of Beechworth, page 78, it has a section on Sir Ambrose Browne who was created a baronet in 1727 (1627?) and died in 1661:
"... leaving issue, two sons, ADAM, his heir; and Ambrose who predeceased his father unmarried, with two daughters, the elder m. to John [sic] Brown, esq of Buckland ..."
The son ADAM died with an only dau and heiress Margaret who dsp in 1720.  Her co-heir therefore was her aunt who had married George [or  John] Browne of Buckland.

In Burke's Commoners Vol II, p. 540, pub 1836 odd, on the Poyntzes of Cowdray Park, it says of the same Sir Ambrose Browne who was bart in 1727 (1627 surely) and d. in 1661 that his elder daughter was married to George Browne esq of Buckland.

The conclusion to me is that Sir Wm Meux's wife Elizabeth Browne was the dau. of George Browne with a brother Ambrose.  Whether this Beechwood castle Browne daughter married a George Browne of Buckland or possibly a father of George who was named John, also of Buckland, it seems fair conclusion to say that Elizabeth Browne was, somehow descended from the Brownes of Beechworth castle and move backwards from there.

Obviously I will keep going for more information.

3rd Dec 2001: In "Buckland 1000-2000, AVillage History" by Dr C Ferns, pub 1999, pp 12-9, there seems to be a replication of an entry in a Surrey Visitation record of 1662 [ie follow that up!] which says:
1. Elizabeth, George's wife was 3rd dau. of Sir Ambrose Browne,
2. Geo and Eliz had 2 sons, Ambrose & John, and 2 daus., Elizabeth & Philippa.
3. Geo Browne had a son George by his 1st wife Anne, dau. of Walter Doble of Street, Sussex, arm.

All looking rather conclusive.

Buckland is near Dorking, by the way.

Oct 2002: The Surrey visitation has been found and confirms all, having a signature of George Browne himself.

From Adrian Channing on 30 Nov 2004:

Both the wives of George Browne (-1675)
(Anne Doble and Elizabeth Browne) seem to have had interests in Bayham manor
and abbey (site of) which has hitherto confused me.

Jennett Raymond was the heir (and presumably son in law) of George son of
George Browne by Anne Doble as is apparent from the A2A extract below.

I have also transcribed the PCC will of George Browne (-1675), and if it is
of interested I enclose a copy, but it is of no help regarding his daughters.

regards,
Adrian
