Notes for Gilbert de Neville
The College of Arms reports that he came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. Various Nevilles reported that he was an admiral in William's fleet; hence he got a ship on his coat of arms. But (1) no supporting evidence to any of this and (2) coats of arms were not invented until around 1150.
CP has him in some charters of 1086 and 1115-18 for land in the Lincs region.
