Notes for Richard Lybbe
RCLP-L found this in "extracts from Dr Cooke's letter":
Richard Lybbe father of the above [Richard Lybbe, MP, his son] was mayor of Tavistock in 1497 and died in 1504. Leaves each of his sones Richard, John & William & Robert "Unum sarcum de Tavistokes". To John he also leaves "Unum bale de mader". His wife Joanna is his residuary legatee and sole executrix. He had a good number of houses and gardens in Tavistock. This makes his will all the more extraordinary.
"Tavistock in those days used to manufacture a kind of serge. I take it that Richard Lybbe was in the trade and that he was a dyer as well as he leaves John a bale of madrer. A sarth (?) or shirt is not much of a legacy but it seems to be all he bequeathed to his sons."
