Notes for George Brown
March 2021, TFPL: At last found his baptism transcript by me from an image of the register page:

John Brown Mercht. & Jean Mayne a son Geo born
“Dec 20  Witt: Thos Reid & John Graham Merchants”
_________________________

In addition to their 16 live children, there were four stillborn children:
Girl  16 May 1795,
Girl  26 Jun 1799,
Boy  21 Jul 1803,
Boy 23 Sep 1812.

In the Old Parochial Register for Glasgow, Lanarks for his birth, the entry is:

“John Brown Mercht & Jean Mayne a Son Geo: born 28th Dec: Witt: (?) Thos Reid and John Graham Merchants.”

In a codicil the following day to his will of 1828 he states that all his children were of age except his son Robert Brown.  Another item to be taken up later.

FindMyPast shows a burial that might, or might not, be him:

Last name                   BROWN
Date of burial:             10 July 1829

Neither the date nor the place look right, though.  (Who would be called George Brown!)

In 2021 Ancestry produced an image of a different register and I have transcribed it as:

_______________

In 2021 I found that Scotland’s People had the marriage register page also under the name Broun.  My transcript is:

“Mr George Broun Merchant in Leith and Miss Margaret Balfour Daughter of Major Henry Balfour of Leith after proclamation of banns were married July 19th 1786.”

This brings us right back into the issue of which Henry Balfour was involved.  Other entries on the same page included ‘deceased’ for some of the fathers so it sounds as if it means that this Henry was still alive in 1786 but both Henries were alive then.
