Notes:

  1. The arms granted by Lyon are all taken from James Balfour Paul's "Ordinary of Arms", pub by William Green in 1893 and from Vol II published in 1977.
  2. The arms granted to the Trotters of Horton in the Royal Licence of 1868 are taken from a transcript of that RL provided by the College of Arms from their file copy.
  3. The crests for the Mowbray Trotters were found by purchasing the full matriculations from the Lyon Office or from the Scotland's People site, but that has yet to be done for Trotter of Brin.
  4. William Trotter, born Brown, had the Argent cantons added to the Trotter quarter of his arms to distinguish him from those Trotters who were descended from the Trotters of Kettleshiel.
  5. William Sampson Trotter, 1st surv. s. to William Trotter, bore the arms of the Descendants of Trotter of Horton but his line expired totally.
  6. The heir male to James Trotter of Kettleshiel is almost certainly a descendant of the Trotters of Brin, in the line of John Trotter, first cousin of James.
  7. The heir male to William Trotter of Horton is William Henry Trotter of the USA.
  8. The heir general to James Trotter is myself and if I cared to change my name to Trotter, the Lyon Office might even matriculate me with James Trotter's arms.
